Hearing Aid Multi-Phase Study

DIARY STUDY | IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS

The research question: A mobile phone company wanted to better understand the behaviors of hearing aid users to improve accessibility features on mobile devices.

The approach: I led research across 2 markets (a European country and the US), where I:

  • Helped co-create the diary and interview guides with the client, with a focus on accessibility for d/Deaf and HOH participants

  • Trained and managed an international team conducting interviews in Europe

  • Managed a week-long diary study, including tracking, coding, and probing responses to daily entries on a mobile diary platform

  • Conducted remote, in-depth-interviews to understand user journeys and pain points

The outcome: While I cannot speak to the exact feedback on the features due to a strict NDA, findings were used to steer new, accessible feature development within mobile phones on a global level. I also personally grew tremendously in my understanding of moderating with d/Deaf and HOH participants. I ensured sessions were live captioned and sign language interpreters were available. While reporting, I was able to push back on ableist assumptions about hearing aid users and give participants a say in the product development process.
